Around this time next month, I will be on a plane back to the United States. My future feels bright, if not entirely solidified – at this point, there is a fair chance I may not have a job right when I touch down in the U.S., but will ideally have some final interviews scheduled.

Ironically enough, one of the quotes that stuck with me most this past year was simply pinned to a TCS cubicle in South Mumbai. The quote: “Take risks every day. If you fail, you can guide. If you succeed, you can lead.”

I was lucky enough to attend several stimulating panel discussions at the AIC, one of which was on the issue of gender diversity and corporate management. Gender diversity and corporate management has become an increasingly topical issue in recent years due to two major factors. First, the debate has been transformed from an issue of equality to one of superior performance.

Winning the chance to attend the 2013 Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference in Hong Kong with Project Firefly was a truly memorable experience. One of the highlights was getting to know the other winners, Joel Lee from Singapore and Romain Su from France: two standout gents.

When I first arrived in India, I began to stoke a fairly obsessive relationship with news cycles – blogs, newspapers and social feeds.  The need to stay connected intellectually to the United States was visceral, but I also found an interesting ‘meta’ experience seeing Western news outlets report on India.

“Passing off horse meat as beef”! This probably sounds like a common recounting of a local butcher’s chicanery in a developing country, where “caveat emptor” still prevails. However, recent events suggest otherwise. European consumers are still reeling from the meat adulteration scandal, which initially erupted in the United Kingdom but has now engulfed much of the continent. Not surprisingly, more and more European consumers are now ditching top-notch supermarkets and food companies in the wake of the scandal.

Historically, I have not been a travel-buff. This may be incongruous with the fact that I moved halfway around the world for my first job, but as I’ve emphasized before, my primary aim in coming to India was career exploration.

In 1935, Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger devised an experiment – if you put a cat together with a flask of poison and a radioactive source and link everything together in a complex and potentially deadly sealed box, the cat is considered both dead and alive. Luckily for the cat, this was a thought experiment. Something similar is happening today in the Venezuelan capital Caracas – the city is both in the top and bottom 10 of the world’s most expensive cities.

2012 was definitely an eventful year for the world, and it was made even more memorable by a few archaeologists who dug up an ancient Mayan calendar and predicted that the world would come to an end on December 21 (which was purported to be the last day of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mayan Long Count Calendar). Undoubtedly, the Mayan prophecy generated a lot of publicity – insofar that a small French village called Bugarach (touted as the “safest” place during an apocalypse) had to be blocked off to prevent the entry of hundreds of frantic visitors.

I have rotated through approximately 10 roommates in the seven months I’ve been in Mumbai -- young professionals hailing everywhere from Peru to Kenya. As fates would have it, my current roster of roommates includes two fellow Americans, both of whom also work in my office. For us Americans, these past two months in particular were emotionally resonant, as friends and family in the United States celebrated the holiday season and splashed news of their festivities across various social networks.

Last March, I had the opportunity to attend the Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference with Project Firefly. Throughout the week in Hong Kong, my fellow finalists and I witnessed a number of insightful discussions on economics, politics, development, and international relations. These speakers were world renowned leaders of governments and central banks, economists, and well regarded authors.
